Photographing Witches Walk

Explore the excitement, costumes, characters, and theatrical atmosphere of Winston-Salem’s Witches Walk in this three-week photography class. Designed for photographers of all experience levels, this hands-on course will help you prepare for and photograph a lively public event while developing skills in low-light photography, environmental portraiture, candid storytelling, and creative composition.
During the first week, students will prepare for the event by discussing camera settings, equipment choices, lighting conditions, personal safety, event etiquette, and what to expect while photographing in a busy public environment. Students will also explore techniques for approaching participants, capturing expressive portraits, anticipating spontaneous moments, and creating a visual story of the evening.
The second week will take place on location at the Witches Walk in Winston-Salem on Friday, October 23. Students will photograph costumed participants, street scenes, performances, decorations, and the energy of the event while receiving hands-on guidance from the instructor.
During the final week, students will share and review photographs created during the Witches Walk. Through group discussion and constructive critique, participants will identify their strongest images, discuss editing and sequencing choices, and explore ways to develop the photographs into a cohesive event series.
Weekly Schedule
Week 1: Preparing for the Witches Walk
Camera settings, equipment, low-light techniques, event photography etiquette, creative approaches, and what to expect during the shoot.
Week 2: Witches Walk Photo Shoot
A guided, on-location photography experience during the Witches Walk in downtown Winston-Salem.
Week 3: Image Review and Critique
Review, edit, and discuss photographs from the event while selecting images that best communicate its atmosphere and story.
Students should bring a digital camera with manual controls and be comfortable walking and photographing outdoors during the evening.
C. Stephen Hurst
C. Stephen Hurst recently moved to Winston-Salem from New York City where he spent many years as a professional photographer and instructor at the International School of Photography. Hurst is a self-taught photographer who emphasizes connection, anticipation, and communication through his process; some of Hurst’s photography clients have included the Disney Family Foundation, Nike, and Columbia Business School.
