Fiber and Flow: Create a Tapestry Through Wet Felting

Guided by Fiber Artist Samara Johnson, with both meditative and movement experiences, students will learn how to felt a small tapestry surface using both wet-felting and needle-felting techniques with sheep’s wool. Participants will be encouraged to create work based on an imaginary, abstract, or realistic concept. This body-mind practice will result in a unique felted wall-hanging as well as confidence in art making through communal experiential learning. Samara is an energetic teacher and will demonstrate both wet and needle felting techniques. All supplies included. Ages 15 and up.
Samara Johnson
Samara Johnson (b. 1989, Anchorage, AK) received her MFA from the University of Colorado at Boulder in 2020, a BFA, and a BA in French from Sonoma State University in 2013. Johnson is an interdisciplinary artist.
Beyond her artistic practice, Samara engages with her community as both an academic and a volunteer. She is a dedicated educator, having taught at various institutions, including the University of Colorado at Boulder, Metropolitan State University, and the University of Wyoming, where she currently serves as an Assistant Lecturer. As part of her artistic practice, she volunteers as a horse handler in equine therapy and has taught numerous community art workshops. Her work has been exhibited nationally and internationally, including at the Arvada Center for the Arts, George Mason University, the Healdsburg Center for the Arts, the Horse and Art Program (HARP) in Barnag, Hungary, and the Center for Visual Arts in Denver.
Samara now resides in Laramie, Wyoming, where she continues to teach at the University of Wyoming, create, and contribute to her community.
Samara is visiting Winston Salem as a part of the SECAC Conference and hosting a Visiting Artist Workshop in October, 2026.
