Block Printing on Fabric with Natural Dyes
Class - Textiles | Available
Block Printing with Natural Dyes on textiles dates back over thousands of years. Foundational techniques were developed in China and perfected in India over 2,000 years ago. Wooden blocks are still hand carved and can be found and bought online today. This class will let students dip their toes into a traditional method of block printing using natural dyes through a mordant dye paste, which means the mordant will be mixed in with the dye paste. The dyes will be made ahead of time, so students will primarily be working on the block printing stage. Recipes will be discussed so students can replicate the paste on their own. Students will be working on a bandana during class. Blocks will be made available to use by students for the class. If students wish to purchase their own block(s) for printing and bring with them, they are welcome to do so. All supplies included. Ages 14 and up.
