Taste of Art: Suminagashi: Japanese paper marbling

Taste of Art - Graphics | Available

Suminagashi - Japanese for "floating ink" - is an ancient form of printmaking using only ink, water, and atmosphere. Concentric rings of ink are floated on the water's surface, then shift into flowing, organic patterns with gentle movements. Each sheet you pull is genuinely one of a kind. This workshop is designed for beginners, but experienced makers often find it just as absorbing. Come ready to slow down, pay attention, and lose yourself in letting go. You'll go home with beautiful papers that can be used in collage, card, or bookmaking, or simply enjoyed as your own unique artwork.

Things to know:
  • All materials are provided with a supply fee of $10
  • Participants should wear clothing they don’t mind getting ink on (an apron is optional) and shoes with non-slip soles.
  • Disposable gloves are optional; everything we use is generally safe on skin, but folks with sensitivities or who prefer not to handle ink directly may wish to use them.
  • Some papers may still be drying at the end of class; arrangements will be made for pickup if needed.
