Open Metals Studio is for advanced and experienced students who want additional time and access to the specialized tools and equipment in the Metals Studio — or simply want dedicated creative time alongside other makers. Students provide their own materials and metals. Open Studio is intended for students who have already completed an eight-week Beginning or Intermediate metals class at Sawtooth School. Independent metalsmiths interested in studio access outside the class track are welcome to inquire.

Participants should already be knowledgeable in the safe and appropriate use of studio equipment. Open Studio is not intended for experimenting with unfamiliar equipment, and Sawtooth reserves the right to limit equipment use as needed for safety and studio operations. Processes involving kiln operations are not included in Open Metals Studio.

Fee is $20 per morning or per evening.

Please phone 336 723-7395 or email Sara Stine at metals@sawtooth.org to register. Online registration is not available. Walk-ins will be accepted, however please be aware if no one else has registered studio may be closed, so please register in advance if possible.

Sara Sloan Stine

Sara is also the Director of Metals and Glass at the Sawtooth School. Sara’s love of metalsmithing started in college at Iowa State University, where she was first exposed to handcrafted jewelry-making by master metalsmith Chuck Evans. After college, she was the metals studio technician at Parsons School of Design’s summer program at Lake Placid Center for the Arts, where she was surrounded by world-class metalsmiths who were teaching students in weeklong intensives. As the director of Metals and Glass programs, she re-creates that combination of education and artistic immersion at Sawtooth. Sara sees a spark of excitement in every student as they learn new ways to creatively express themselves in metals or glass. She enjoys being a supportive, patient instructor and loves passing on her knowledge of more than 30 years as a silversmith. “This position allows me the pleasure of working with many wonderful artists in many mediums. They pass along not just technical knowledge, but a passion for their art. For me, teaching keeps alive the exciting, experimental side of metal-smithing, and through the students’ eyes, I see ever-changing views of jewelry.”
