From Scraps to -Scapes: Painted Paper Collage

Visiting Artist-Graphics | Registration opens 5/19/2026 9:00 AM EDT

Explore the fun and expressive freedom of painted paper collage. Students will begin by making creatively textured and colored paper using a variety of mediums — gouache, acrylic, pencil, crayon, etc. — and application techniques like painting, dripping, splattering, scribbling, and so forth. Students will gain confidence with collage shape-making and application skills by first creating small, imaginative pieces.

Then, working from reference landscape photographs, students will construct larger, loosely realistic collages, learning to approximate color, texture, and composition to achieve a painterly, expressive look of the landscape using big and small bits of paper. All levels welcome.

Colbert, Kristi
Kristi Colbert

Kristi W. Colbert (she/her) is a mixed media artist specializing in painted paper collage - a medium she wandered into experimentally as a means of breaking out of her perfectionism and into her creative freedom.?With a B.A. in Studio Art and Geology from Colgate University, a M.S. in Leadership from Northeastern University, and nearly 20 years experience working in various sectors of education, Kristi returned to her lifelong passion for art in earnest at the onset of the pandemic.

Now working from her home studio in Western Massachusetts, she draws inspiration from her surroundings and travel. Made entirely from scraps, her work explores the wonder of place and beauty of duality. It is painterly and sculptural; deconstructive and reconstructive; realistic and abstract; intricate and unfussy. It’s a record of places traveled, a map to what lies ahead, and an energetic practice in piecing back together this breaking world. Kristi's work has been exhibited in Massachusetts, Connecticut, New York, and Michigan, recognized by the Massachusetts Cultural Council, featured in Gillette Stadium and the Massachusetts State House, and has a fast growing body of collectors near and far.
