Intaglio on Screens: Exploring Natural and Built Landscapes

Visiting Artist-Printmkg | Registration opens 5/19/2026 9:00 AM EDT

Discover an entirely new approach to screen printing! This workshop introduces an experimental method to mono screen printing focused on landscape and architectural imagery. Students will work with a technique developed by Anna Bryant that adapts Akua Intaglio inks directly to the screen. By using inks traditionally reserved for intaglio processes, the screen becomes a painterly surface capable of transparency, layering, and subtle tonal shifts.

Students will learn how to translate their own imagery into this process, adapting visual ideas to the responsive behavior of the ink. We'll work intuitively on the screen to build layered images, manipulate color interactions, and incorporate expressive mark-making. Iterations and ghost prints will be a central part of the process, where each new pull becomes an opportunity to shift, extend, or reinterpret the imagery. Each print is unique, and variation is an essential part of the process.

Come ready to explore what becomes possible when the intaglio world meets the mesh!

This workshop is open to printmakers, painters, and artists interested in exploring process-driven approaches to image making. All levels — no prior screen printing experience is required.

Anna Bryant

Anna Bryant is a printmaking artist living and creating in Asheville, North Carolina. A largely self-taught artist, her early work focused on traditional relief and screen printing processes before evolving into a new experimental approach to mono printing. At the beginning of 2025, she developed a technique that adapts intaglio inks, traditionally used for printing metal plates, for use on a mesh screen. Blending painting and printmaking, Anna builds and manipulates ink directly on the screen, creating layered images in which no two prints are ever the same.

Her work examines the relationship between constructed and natural landscapes and how these systems continuously reshape one another. Subtle shifts from one screen pull to the next record change over time and reveal the fragile balance between engineered and ecological systems.

Anna is the co-founder / owner of Print House in Asheville, NC. Her work has been exhibited at the North Carolina Museum of Art, Houston Center for Contemporary Craft, American Craft Made Baltimore, Center for Craft (WNC), and The Bascom: A Center for Visual Arts. She’s been featured in publications including Pressing Matters, Good Grit Magazine, and NC Arts Council.

Her practice has been supported by the Marshall and Marguerite McComb Foundation Fellowship, the WNC Craft Futures Cohort Grant (Center for Craft), and the Artist’s Fellowship Grant (NYC).

Anna earned a BS from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte and began and continues her education through intensive study throughout national printmaking studios and residencies.
