Portraits: Photographing Strangers

Class - Photography | Registration opens 5/12/2026 9:00 AM EDT

Step beyond your comfort zone and discover the power of connection through portraiture in Portraits: Photographing Strangers. This 3-week class, meeting once a week for 2 hours, explores how the camera can serve as both a passport and a bridge—opening doors to meaningful interactions with people you’ve never met. Through a thoughtful, human-centered approach, students will learn how to engage strangers with empathy, respect, and curiosity. We’ll discuss how to initiate conversations, build quick yet genuine rapport, and create a collaborative environment where your subject feels seen and valued. The goal is not just to take a photograph, but to create an experience that is empowering for both photographer and subject. Photo Credit: C. Stephen Hurst 'Triad AnimeCon' 2026.

  • Technically, the course will cover portrait fundamentals in real-world settings, including working with available light, choosing environments that enhance your subject’s story, and making compositional decisions that feel intentional and honest. Students will spend time photographing in the field, putting these skills into practice while learning to adapt to unpredictable situations.

Each week builds toward a cohesive body of work that reflects both technical growth and a deeper understanding of ethical, respectful storytelling.

Week 1: Approach and mindset—ethics, consent, starting conversations, and building trust.
Week 2: Field work—photographing strangers in public spaces, focusing on connection and environment.
Week 3: Refinement and critique—editing, sequencing, and discussing the impact of your images.

    What to Bring:
A camera (DSLR or mirrorless recommended) and a willingness to engage with new people and experiences.

    Who This Class Is For:
Photographers of all levels interested in documentary-style portraiture and developing stronger interpersonal and storytelling skills.

Leave with greater confidence approaching strangers, a deeper sense of empathy in your work, and a compelling series of portraits that reflect authentic human connection.
