Photographing Garden Flowers

Class - Photography | Registration opens 5/12/2026 9:00 AM EDT

Discover the art of transforming delicate blooms into striking photographic subjects in this three-week class at Sawtooth School for Visual Art. Designed for photographers of all skill levels, this course explores how to elevate everyday garden scenes into compelling, portfolio-worthy images.

  • Over three 90-minute sessions, students will dive into the essential techniques that bring flower photography to life. You’ll learn how to recognize and shape natural light—from soft morning glow to dramatic midday contrast—and how it influences color, texture, and mood. Through guided exercises, we’ll explore composition strategies that go beyond the obvious, including framing, depth, negative space, and abstract perspectives.

Lens selection and shooting methods will be a major focus, with discussions on macro versus telephoto approaches, depth of field control, and stability techniques for achieving crisp, detailed images. Students will also gain insight into practical field workflow—how to approach a subject, adapt to changing conditions, and work efficiently in a garden setting.

The course concludes with an introduction to post-production techniques, where you’ll refine your images using editing tools to enhance color, contrast, and clarity while maintaining a natural aesthetic.

Whether you’re capturing a single bloom or an immersive garden scene, this class will sharpen your eye, strengthen your technical skills, and help you create images that celebrate the beauty and nuance of flowers.
