Remembering the Times
Workshop - Printmaking | Available
Join us and the Undying Yearning project team for a guided collage and gelli plate printing experience. The workshop will explore memories from high school and college experiences of graduates from the mid-20th century. Reflect on school days while learning texture building and image collage techniques, and build community by connecting with "Katie B." and "Big Four" alumni to learn about lesser-known aspects of Winston-Salem's history. Participants should bring at least ten 4 x 6 to 8 x 10-inch photographs or letters of your favorite school memories to photocopy. You can also bring yearbooks and other times to be scanned.
Participants Will:
- Explore texture-building, collage, and image-transfer techniques
- Create multiple gelli plate prints to contribute to a new artist book made by artist Sauda Mitchell to commemorate the Undying Yearning project
Undying Yearning is a project that peers into the past of Winston-Salem, North Carolina to understand how and why the city's Black institutions thrived. It is a partnership between consultant and Black on Black founder Michael S. Williams and the North Carolina Museum of Art. It is made possible through funding from the William R. Kenan Jr. Charitable Trust. Learn more about the project at https://www.undyingyearning.art/about.
Sauda Mitchell
Sauda Mitchell is an American printmaker, certified archivist, and educator from Winston-Salem, North Carolina. Sauda explores the book as an object linking viewers to archival repositories, curated exhibitions, and aggregated data. Each work serves as a visual response to archival collection materials representative of the many stories that can be found deep within the archival landscape.
Sauda teaches how the combination of primary sources and bookmaking introduces concepts like collective memory, cultural heritage, and individual perspectives. As teaching tools, Sauda’s artists' books are held in the permanent collections of the Library of Congress, Harvard Fine Arts Library and Smithsonian Libraries.
