Eco-Friendly Rag Rug Weaving
Class - Textiles | Available
This weaving class is geared towards any level and will cover all aspects of floor loom
weaving. Students will learn how to prepare a warp, warp their own loom, and weave a 4-5 foot weaving. This class will draw from the tradition of Rag Rug making using plain weave to create a durable rug or wall piece. While Rag Rug weaving typically uses scrap fabric, this class will encourage the use of recycled materials like plastic bags, which can be cut into long strips of “plarn” (plastic yarn). By incorporating a wide range of recycled materials students will get to explore how different colors and textures work together while also considering how to synthesize eco-friendly and sustainable practices into their weaving practice. After completing their weavings, students will learn how to remove their piece from the loom and finishing techniques including knot-tying, sewn hems, and hanging methods from wood
dowels, sticks, or alternative recycled materials. All supplies included. Ages 14 and up.
