Most of us aren't professional writers, but we carry stories worth telling. Whether you want to understand yourself better, preserve family history, or share hard-won wisdom with others, your life holds moments of beauty, struggle, transformation, and meaning that deserve to be shaped into lasting legacy. In this course, I'll show you exactly the process I used to write my book, Pockets of Grace: Lessons from Darkness, Lessons from Light—the same techniques that helped me transform scattered memories into a cohesive, powerful memoir.
This is the perfect course to take after the Stories from the Heart class. While Stories from the Heart helps you get started and discover which stories you want to tell and how, this class focuses on the craft of memoir writing—refining individual pieces and weaving them together into a cohesive narrative. You don't need to have taken Stories from the Heart to join (though it certainly helps!). This is where we roll up our sleeves and turn your life experiences into memoir.
This workshop is led by Heidi Gessner, author of Pockets of Grace: Lessons from Darkness, Lessons from Light, and former palliative care chaplain at UNC Hospitals. Heidi created and co-led Writing for Resilience, a weekly reflective writing group for patients, caregivers, and staff, where she witnessed lives change, dreams take shape, and healing begin through writing.
