4.1 Portrait Painting Basics

Workshop - Graphics | Registration opens 5/13/2025 9:00 AM EDT

If you are interested to have a taste of learning portrait painting, this is the perfect workshop for you. Viktoria has well over a decade experience in teaching painting.

She developed a simple approach, which ensures that you achieve your best results, and gain the confidence to continue learning after the workshop.

All skill levels are welcome.

Each participant will receive personalized instruction, guiding them through the whole process, step by step. You will learn how to measure, sketch, mix skin colors, and paint the head to create the sense of three dimensional form.

  • 11X14 or 16x20 canvas – student (economy) grade is fine.

A few print paper and/or notebook, pen & soft graphite pencil

Wood palette any shape (no paper nor white plastic please) plexiglass or glass is ok

with neutral color backing. If your wooden palette is not varnished when purchased,

make sure to varnish it at least a few days before class, so it has time to dry, with

    waterbased polyurethane or polycrylic.

Small jar of linseed or safflower oil

(for acrylic paint – slow dry medium if you are not using open acrylics)

Bristle brushes or synthetic brushes made for oil painting

    (Filbert #2, #4, #6 Round #0)

for acrylic users – acrylic, synthetic brushes, Flat shape #2, #4, #8, Round #0

for example: Robert Simmons Signet F series, Master's Choice (Hobby Lobby)

Rosemary or Princeton are also good brands

I recommend to use professional grade paints as opposed to student grade paints for

best results. NO color “hues” please, ie: cadmium red hue.

There are many good professional oil brands, here are a few examples:

Gamblin, Rembrandt, Old Holland, Vassari, M. Graham, Holbein, Michael Harding,

    Charvin.

37ml size paint tubes are big enough.

If you use Acrylic Paints : Also make sure to buy professional artist grade paints.

Examples: Golden, M.Graham, Winsor&Newton Professional or Old Holland are good

quality brands. Golden OPEN acrylics are recommended for ease of use.

Colors for acrylics: titanium white, ultramarine blue, cadmium yellow primrose,

cadmium orange, cadmium red light, permanent maroon

    Recommended Colors for oils:

titanium white, ultramarine blue, cadmium yellow light, cadmium orange, cadmium red

    light, alizarin crimson

Optional, “nice to have” color: pthalo green or viridian

NO color “hues” please, ie: cadmium red hue. Small tubes 37 ml

For acrylics I recommend a slow dry medium, or drying retardant if you don't use open

    acrylics

Paper towel + cotton rags (old T-shirts cut up) – small pieces
