This class is available only to students who have taken at least 1 clay class at Sawtooth.

Explore the creative possibilities of clay without using a potter's wheel. Beginners will advance their skill set by learning pinch, slab, and coil techniques to create various projects. Students with more experience can refine their skills while exploring new forms and design options. Decorating and glazing techniques for atmospheric firing will also be explored.

Explore form, function, textures, tactile qualities, and surface development of atmospheric firing. During the firings, the draft created by the chimney pulls wood ash and alkaline vapors released by the heat of the fire through the kiln. The ash is deposited on the pottery in the path of the flame and creates a varied palette of colors and textures not achievable in any other way. Ages: 18 - Adult

Students will take an active roll in helping load and fire the kiln at the end of the session. Students will also be expected to help with one wood prep shift during the session.

  • Students enrolled in ceramics classes and workshops may sign up for additional open studio hours for the duration of their class.

This class meets a total of 9 times (skip 1/16).
  • A $60 material fee for the first 25 pounds of stoneware clay and related glazing and wood firing will be added at time of checkout. Porcelain clay excluded.

For your first class, you will need to bring a an old hand towel or bath towel, a large car wash sponge and a bucket or other open container to hold about a quart of water. Additionally, you will need a pottery tool kit (if you do not already have one). To purchase, please bring with you to your first class $20.00 cash or a check made out to Sawtooth School for Visual Art. If paying cash, please bring exact change, as we can not currently provide change.
Taylor, Pam

As a long time resident of North Carolina, I have discovered the art of expression through pottery. I became a pottery instructor at Sawtooth to share this passion with others after starting my own exploration in 2006 as an adult student in a weekly class at a local art gallery in South Carolina. Today, I continue to share and grow with others through education, and work I produce at my home studio.

McCall, Sam

I'm Sam McCall, a potter, ceramicist, and Artist in Residence at Sawtooth School for Visual Art. I was born and raised in St. George, Utah and, like many, had my first ceramics experience in high school. I later attended Dixie State University where I studied under Shane Christensen and reveiced my Associates Degree. The itch to wood fire and the lack of necessary resources guided me to Utah State University in Loga, Utah. There I studied under John Neely and Dan Murphy while finishing my Bachelors of Fine Arts in Ceramics in the Spring of 2021.
