Kintsugi (pronounced keen-soo-gee) translates to “golden joinery”. Instead of discarding pottery that breaks, the art of Kintsugi treats breakage and repair as part of the history of an object, rather than something to disguise. It highlights the cracks and repairs as simply an event in the life of an object rather than allowing its service to end at the time of its damage or breakage. This philosophy serves as a powerful metaphor for living our lives in a way that is focused on healing ourselves and the world around us.

Participants have the option of bringing in their own piece of broken pottery or choosing from a provided broken or damaged handmade piece of pottery that speaks to them. You will then be guided through the process of repairing your chosen vessel using a reimagined and contemporary approach to the traditional labor-intensive process of kintsugi. Participants will adhere the broken pieces back together and highlight the scars using gold luster, producing a decorative vessel to adorn the home.

Ages: 13 - Adult

  • This workshop will conclude with an opportunity for participants to share in an instructor-led discussion of interpreting the philosophy of kintsugi in our daily lives. When we’ve put in the time to heal our own broken pieces and know the gold in our scars, we are more likely to have the courage to be vulnerable enough to show those scars of gold to others.
