Join us for an exciting weekend-long hands on workshop learning how to use clay as your artistic canvas! Participants will leave the workshop with three primary skills:

1) Use and mix underglazes to soften colors and add more depth to ceramic pieces.

2) Work in layers by practicing a repetitive process of applying underglaze followed by wax to protect the image and add color variation.

3) Carve and inlay designs on cylindrical or flat surfaces.

This surface design workshop is suitable for hand builders and wheel throwers. Although the instructor often creates pieces with images of people, plants, and furniture, participants can come with the outline of any drawing or printed design that fits the size of their piece.

  • Class is capped at a maximum of 8 students. Cloth face coverings and social distancing are required in this and all Sawtooth classes.
  • Participants will need to bring 3-5 images, 3-5 leather hard pieces with a flat surface (i.e. cylindrical form or plate), small and medium sized paint brushes, a stylus tool, and a large sponge for cleaning.
