Students will explore the painting methods of the20th Century master, John Singer Sargent. Students will make graphite studies of Sargent’s painting “Marchesa Laura Spinola Nunez del Castillo”at Reynolda House to explore Sargent’s style and strategy. At Sawtooth students will complete between two oil portraits, and are always invited to explore their own methods and style. Instructor Jonathan Dockery emphasizes the importance of capturing the spirit of the subject through accurate proportion, gesture, expression, and composition. Students will learn how to build a robust color palette, how to
measure and map an accurate depiction of the model ontheir canvas, and how to describe the three-dimensionality of the subject through a simple method of color application.
