U.S. Grant was intelligent, a quick study, and had a great memory. Along with his ability to lead armies to victory during the Civil War, these qualities would serve him well during his two-terms as president. He would need all those traits to navigate America through the tumultuous times of reconstruction, a major recession, westward expansion, and potential foreign wars during the 1870s.
