Meet Lou Andreas-Salomé, an accomplished 19th-century writer, thinker, and psychoanalyst. With socially unconventional mores, this muse of Nietzsche, Rilke, and Freud was labeled femme fatale. Was she? Over two weeks, we will look at Salome’s biography and involvement with significant male figures by watching and discussing two compelling and contrasting films. When Nietzsche Wept (Perry, 2007, English language) conveys Nietzsche’s perspective. Lou Andreas-Salomé: The Audacity to be Free (Kablitz-Post, 2016, German language) takes Salomé's point-of-view. English subtitles will be shown for both insightful films.
