We'll begin with the origin of the universe starting with the Big Bang, then show how stars were / are still being made from cosmic dust. We will look at ways to find the distance to stars and galaxies and touch on dark matter and dark energy. Closer to home, we'll examine how the top layer of the Earth is moved by tectonic plates, how different rocks are made, and the relationship between climate and types of soil beginning here in Ohio.

Moderator: Rick Takanen has been a member of OLLI since 2009. He has moderated many travel related programs and is beginning his third year moderating this course. He currently serves on the OLLI Board of Directors. He graduated from Worcester Polytechnic Institute in Massachusetts. He retired from GE Aviation after a 35-year career in 2009.
