4639 Math Before Computers

One-time in-Person | Available

Why did people need math before computers? How did people in premodern and ancient times make complex calculations? We will touch on ancient mechanical calculators, mechanical computers, log table usage, log table generation in the 1600s, how the ancients calculated squares, the Polar Planimeter and calculating areas, and the abacus. Rick Marra's approach is non-technical and focused on a general audience. He is a retired engineer who loves science and math.
