1980 VPC IN PERSON ONLY: "Suffs" The Musical, Voter Suppression, and Encouraging New Voters
One-time in-Person | Available
The popular Broadway musical “Suffs” comes to Cincinnati’s Aronoff Theater May 12-17. The inspiring story of a small group of women fighting for the right to vote is ultimately successful. But Black women are not welcomed into the movement. The poignant song, “Not My Turn” points to the delay of many years for suffrage for people of color. With efforts to suppress voting and influence outcomes, American politics will be discussed. Strategies for citizen involvement to protect our democracy will be shared. Active participation is encouraged.
Moderators: Becky Lilley is a retired mental health counselor, educator, professor, and dean with a long-term interest in gender studies and social justice. Kimberly Jacob is Vice President for Voter Support at League of Women Voters in the Cincinnati area. She will share her expertise in current issues around American voting.
