3064 B-17 in the Beanfield: The War Comes to the Land of American Gothic
One-time in-Person | Available
A glimpse into rural Iowa in 1942, when a B-17 bomber on a training mission made an emergency landing in a farm field and became the talk of the county. Learn how the community welcomed nine young airmen into their homes and helped to get the plane back into flying shape while the crew made connections with everyone from college coeds to fourth graders to the daughter of the police chief.
Moderator: Dan Brady is a four-year OLLI member who recently presented a Sampler class about his experience on Jeopardy. He grew up in eastern Iowa hearing about the B-17 story and has been researching it in earnest since early 2020. He hopes you will share his fascination with this little chapter of history.
