2833 Friday Book Class: The Not-So-Gilded Age

Multi-week in-person | Registration opens 1/6/26 10:00 AM

As depicted in the recent drama series, the American Gilded Age was a time of immense wealth. This course presents a different take on the era: a satire of the upper class, a harsh look at urban poverty, an early feminist novel, and a classic of African American literature. We will read and discuss “Custom of the Country” by Edith Wharton (Feb. 6), “Maggie, Girl of the Streets” by Stephen Crane (Feb. 20), “The Awakening” by Kate Chopin (Mar. 6), and “Up from Slavery” by Booker T . Washington (Mar. 20).

Moderators: Susan Robinson has attended and moderated the Friday Book Class for many years. Monique Rothschild is an author, editor and former moderator. They are both avid readers.
