This presentation is largely based on the John Newhouse book, The Sporty Game (“sporty” meaning betting the company). It documents the competition to develop and market the first generation of widebody airplanes whose success depended heavily on a new generation of engines. It involved three large aircraft companies and their governments, three large engine manufacturers, and multiple airlines. It will touch on the technical, financial, and regulatory challenges involved. It will also look at how the three airplanes, manufacturers, and airlines fared in the years that followed.

Moderator: Dan Kemme retired from GE Aerospace after a 33-year career. He managed the flight safety accident investigation group for several years. He received a BSME from Univ. of Dayton, worked at McDonnell Douglas for five years, and is a USC Safety School graduate, Ohio Professional Engineer, and member of the International Society of Air Safety Investigators.
