1427 Mutiny on the Bounty--What Really Happened

Multi-week in-person | Registration opens 1/6/26 10:00 AM

On April 28, 1789, Captain William Bligh of HMS Bounty was relieved of his duties by his second-in-command, Fletcher Christian, the only known mutiny in the history of the British Navy. Over time and with the help of Hollywood, Christian has emerged as the hero ousting the sadistic tyrant Bligh, with the mutineers ultimately finding peace and tranquility on a remote South Pacific Island. This two-week presentation will separate fact from lore. Class participation encouraged.

Moderator: David Dreher has a master's degree in history, and taught history at various levels for fifteen years prior to working for the U.S. Dept of State. In retirement, he was an active member of OLLI at Clemson, offering more than a dozen courses.
