5018 Exploring US History: Women Who Made a Difference

We will trace the histories of American women from the contact of Indigenous, European, and African women from their first contact in North America until the present. Each class meeting will have a specific theme, starting with the theme of “Recent Discoveries and Myths about Women” in our first class. Each student will do research and a brief presentation on a topic of interest to them. Primary source documents and short videos will be assigned weekly with optional readings for those who are interested.
Moderators: Gwendolyn Etter-Lewis is Professor Emerita of English; Black World Studies; and Women's, Gender and Sexuality Studies at Miami Univ. Her research focuses on language and gender, and women’s oral narratives. Christine Anderson is Professor Emerita of American History and Gender and Diversity Studies at Xavier Univ. Her work focuses on women, African-Americans, and public history.
