5018 Exploring US History: Women Who Made a Difference

We will trace the histories of American women from the contact of Indigenous, European, and African women in North America until the present. Each class meeting will have a specific theme, starting with the theme of “Recent Discoveries and Myths about Women” in our first class. Each student will do research and a brief presentation on a topic of interest to them. Primary source documents and short videos will be assigned weekly with optional readings for those who are interested.
Moderators: Christine Anderson is Professor Emerita of American History and Gender and Diversity Studies at Xavier Univ. Her work focuses on women, African-Americans, and public history. Gwendolyn Etter-Lewis is Professor Emerita of English; Black World Studies; and Women's, Gender and Sexuality Studies at Miami Univ. Her research focuses on language and gender, and women’s oral narratives.
