1717 Re-Presenting Freedom Seekers in Charles Webber’s Painting "The Underground Railroad”

One-time in-Person | Registration opens 8/26/25 10:00 AM

Based on fresh research while on a recent Crystal Bridges Museum fellowship, this PPT by UC Art History Professor Theresa Leininger-Miller situates the renowned Cincinnati Art Museum painting in terms of its 15 active African American freedom seekers and white female abolitionists and Charles Webber's oeuvre, as well as its critical reception at the World’s Columbian Exposition in Chicago. It also examines the CAM purchase fund, the work’s exhibition history, and the legacy of Quakers Levi and Catharine Coffin in Cincinnati’s Black community.
