4009 Writing Short Stories

Multi-week in-person | Registration opens 8/26/25 10:00 AM

Throughout this course, we will share and discuss short stories that we like as well as short stories that we write ourselves. We'll work together on revisions to improve our writing. We will also talk about how to submit a story to a literary magazine. Please, no horror stories or ones not appropriate for a general audience, but a few cuss words are ok. I prefer creative nonfiction, like memoir, but fiction is fine, and so are stories aimed at children or teens.

Moderator: Tom Backer was born in a small town in Indiana in 1939, attended XU, and then graduated with a PhD in history at UC in 1978. In retirement, he got As in four college-level writing classes. Since then, literary magazines have published ten of his stories, half in fiction and half in creative nonfiction.
