8017 Art of Jewish Books: Printing, Binding, and Micrography

Experience the art and history of Jewish books at the Klau Library, Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion. Each week covers a different topic and includes a hands-on activity. Week 1: History of Jewish Printing, examining the long history of Hebrew printing; includes printmaking activity. Week 2: History of Bookbinding, illustrating the beautiful and luxurious elements in crafting the bindings of medieval books and manuscripts; includes paper-marbling activity. Week 3: History of Micrography, discovering tiny decorative writing used more than 1,000 years ago; includes up-close access to artifacts along with activity to create a simple micrography work.

Moderator: Karen Martin is fifth-year rabbinic student at HUC-JIR. She grew up in Cincinnati and graduated from Kenyon College with a BA in English. She has an Main Humanities from Univ. of Chicago and MA in Jewish Professional Studies from the Spertus Institute in Jewish Profesional Studies. She is currently the Rabbinic intern at K. K. Bene Israel/Rockdale Temple.
