1935 IN PERSON: Nothing Screwier than Screwball Comedy

One-time in-Person | Registration opens 4/1/25 10:00 AM

To counter the Hollywood Production Code regulating movie content (1934-1968(, directors and screenwriters turned out a type of films known as screwball comedies, filled with romantic innuendo and double entendre. Cary Grant was "king" of the genre, which included Katharine Hepburn, Irene Dunne, Rosalind Russell, Carole Lombard, Melvin Douglas, and Fred MacMurray. Through film clips and discussion, we will explore the origins, definition, characteristics, and impact of screwball comedy, Highlighted films include "My Man Godfrey", "Bringing Up Baby", "The Philadelphia Story". "The Awful Truth," and "His Girl Friday".

Moderator: Doug Iden is a big fan of movies and theatrical musicals with an extensive collection of films and original Broadway scores. He has taught classes on Broadway and film at OLLI for many years.
