1931 ZOOM What Is This Thing Called Film Noir?

one-time ZOOM | Registration opens 1/3/25 10:00 AM

Rooted in German Expressionism, film noir morphed into a moody, stylistic movie genre from the late 1930s into the 1960s. Replete with hard-boiled detectives, grifters, unfortunate innocents, and classic femme fatales, noir films such as "Double Indemnity", "Out of the Past", "The Big Sleep", "The Maltese Falcon", "DOA," and "Laura" exploded from the screen. Through film clips and discussion, we'll explore this dark genre featuring Humphrey Bogart, Ida Lupino, Robert Mitchem, Jane Greer, Orson Welles, Barbara Stanwyck, and others.

Moderator: Doug Iden is a big fan of movies and theatrical musicals, with an extensive collection of films and original Broadway scores. He has taught classes on film and Broadway at OLLI for several years.
