1922 IN-PERSON Backed Up: On Sewer Infrastructure, Local Journalism, and Podcasting

One-time in-Person | Registration opens 1/3/25 10:00 AM

Learn from the team that made the podcast Backed Up from Cincinnati Public Radio, demystifying one of the most complex systems of public infrastructure--our sewers--and telling the stories of people suffering under decades of mismanagement. We’ll talk about the research necessary for investigative journalism and the process of putting it all together for an accessible and often-humorous listener experience. Plus, a discussion about the challenges of local journalism and the future of the podcasting industry.

Moderators: Becca Costello and Ella Rowen are co-hosts of Backed Up. Becca is Cincinnati Public Radio’s Local Government Reporter; she has a Master’s in Journalism from Indiana Univ. and nearly 10 years of public media experience. Ella is CPR’s Podcast Coordinator with a particular passion for sound design; she also produces and engineers CPR’s podcast Looking Up with Dean Regas.
