In this two-part class, students will transform a recycled piece of clothing into a meaningful soft sculpture! Inspired by the T-shirt sculpture in the current exhibition, Future Fossils, young artists will think about how everyday items can be turned into special works of art.
Day 1: Students will design their sculpture by creating a pattern, then learn how to cut fabric, pin pieces together, and safely sew using a sewing machine. Using a recycled fabric item—such as a shirt that has special meaning—artists will begin shaping their sculpture.
Day 2: Students will bring their sculptures to life by adding stuffing and creating details. Using paint and simple hand-sewing, they will add features such as hair, facial expressions, clothing, and other embellishments to make their sculpture unique.
By the end of the lesson, each student will have a personalized soft sculpture made from recycled fabric and filled with creativity and meaning.
