Watercolor Landscapes

In this class, students will explore the beauty of watercolor painting while learning how to create depth in a landscape using foreground, middle ground, and background. This class is inspired by artist Palmer Hayden, featured in the Torggler’s Gateways: African American Art from the Key Collection exhibition, who painted watercolor scenes celebrating African American life. Students will discover how artists use landscapes to tell a story. Looking at Hayden’s White House at Great Bend, we’ll see how details and perspective bring a painting to life. For their project, students will paint a landscape of their choice—either from a photograph they bring in or from a special place on campus.
