Charcoal & Conté Portrait Drawing

In this class, young artists will discover the fun of drawing portraits with charcoal and Conté. Students will learn simple techniques for getting facial features in the right place and practice shading to bring their drawings to life. Inspired by artist Sedrick Huckaby, featured in the Torggler’s Gateways: African American Art from the Key Collection exhibition, who celebrated family and community through portraiture, students will create a meaningful portrait of someone special to them—it could be a self-portrait, a family member, a friend, or even a famous person they admire. By the end of class, each student will take home a unique portrait that reflects both their skills and creativity.
