Intro to Woodcut

Class - Printmaking | Available

Step into the world of bold lines, rich textures, and inked wood in this introduction to woodcut printmaking. This course will guide students through the process of planning, carving, and printing their own woodblocks, exploring both traditional techniques and creative approaches. Alongside studio work, we’ll dive into the history of woodcuts, from their emergence as one of the earliest methods of mass image-making to their role in shaping art, politics, and storytelling across the ages.

A special focus will be given to Cranach the Elder, the celebrated Northern Renaissance artist whose masterful woodcuts combined technical precision with dramatic storytelling. Through lecture, students will learn the history and stylistic aesthetic of the printmaking medium. By the end of the course, students will leave with their own original prints, a deeper understanding of Woodcuts, and the knowledge to do it themselves!

Bowen, Nick
Nick Bowen

Born in Cary, North Carolina and now living in Burlington after graduating from Appalachian State University, Nicholas Bowen is print-maker looking to push the boundaries of technology and combat Artificial Intelligence in the art world. With the interplay of inspiration, appropriation, and reinterpretation as the main themes of his work, Nicholas takes a stand on the inherent bias of Artificial Intelligence. Printmaking has long challenged traditional notions of artistic originality. The dichotomy between Artificial Intelligence and Printmaking invites us to question the sanctity of originality and recognize that creative acts often involve an interplay between inspiration and appropriation. Through his work, Nicholas aims to foster dialogue about the evolving relationship between human creativity and machine intelligence, challenging viewers to reconsider authorship in the digital age. By merging traditional printmaking with emerging technologies, he continues to explore new ways of redefining artistic originality.
