213 A. Beginning and Intermediate Handbuilding - Ceramic Vessel

Class - Ceramics | Available

Explore the creative possibilities of clay without using a potter's wheel. This class will focus on various slab building techniques to create ceramics vessels. Pinching and coiling techniques will be addressed for making additional decorative elements on the vessels. Students with experience can refine their skills while exploring new forms and design options. Decorating and glazing techniques will also be explored. Ages: 16 - Adult

A $35 material fee for the first 25 pounds of stoneware clay will be added at time of checkout.

  • This class meets a total of 9 times.

    In addition to class instruction, the tuition includes related glazes, firings, and access to open studio hours (open studio hours are subject to change).
  • A $30 material fee for the first 25 pounds of stoneware clay will be added at the time of checkout. Porcelain clay excluded.

    For the first day of class, you will need the following:
    • 1 old towel and/or apron
    • 1-3 brushes (small or medium in size)
    • 1 pottery tool kit (available for purchase on the first day of class for $25)
Liu, Po Wen
Po Wen Liu

Po Wen is the Director of Ceramics at Sawtooth. He studied ceramic engineering in Taiwan and received his BFA degree in ceramics and ceramics sculpture from the Rochester Institute of Technology, and MFA degree in ceramics from Northern Illinois University.

Po Wen is the manuscript consultant for 2002 Newbery Medal awarded book, A Single Shard, by Linda Sue Park, regarding making celadon. A Place of Reflection, by Dr. Elizabeth Perril, an article about Po Wen and his works was featured in Ceramics Monthly.

Po Wen served as the director of The Pottery Workshop Jingdezhen, and executive director of Jingdezhen International Studio from 2015 to 2018 where he oversaw international residency program and facilitated international ceramics events, serving the international ceramics community in China and abroad.

Po Wen has also taught ceramic courses and workshops nationally and internationally including University of North Carolina at Greensboro, Sawtooth School for the Visual Art, Leksands folkhögskola, Leksand, Sweden and the School of Design and Arts, Beijing Institute of Technology, Beijing, China.
