Sustainably Scratched: A modern take on Drypoint

Class - Printmaking | Registration opens 5/13/2025 9:00 AM EDT

This workshop introduces participants to the fundamentals of drypoint printmaking through a hands-on exploration of sustainable materials and non-toxic processes. Emphasis will be placed on using recycled and biodegradable printing plates, water-based inks, and recycled or sustainably sourced papers. Students will gain experience in working with alternative materials—such as repurposed acrylic sheets and Tetra-Pak plates—to create detailed, expressive prints without relying on harmful chemicals or traditional metal etching processes. By the end of the session, participants will understand how to select and use eco-conscious tools and supplies, preparing them to build environmentally responsible printmaking practices in their own studios.

Ages 18+

Supplies Needed:
Acrylic plates or Tetra-pak

Bowen, Nick
Nick Bowen

Born in Cary, North Carolina and now living in Burlington after graduating from Appalachian State University, Nicholas Bowen is print-maker looking to push the boundaries of technology and combat Artificial Intelligence in the art world. With the interplay of inspiration, appropriation, and reinterpretation as the main themes of his work, Nicholas takes a stand on the inherent bias of Artificial Intelligence. Printmaking has long challenged traditional notions of artistic originality. The dichotomy between Artificial Intelligence and Printmaking invites us to question the sanctity of originality and recognize that creative acts often involve an interplay between inspiration and appropriation. Through his work, Nicholas aims to foster dialogue about the evolving relationship between human creativity and machine intelligence, challenging viewers to reconsider authorship in the digital age. By merging traditional printmaking with emerging technologies, he continues to explore new ways of redefining artistic originality.
