9330. Hand Tool Basics

This course will teach folks the basics of hand tools and how to use them to make basic joinery. While some experience is helpful, none is necessary. Students will learn how to layout, cut and join wood using only hand tools, including measuring and layout tools. The objective of the class will be to make a simple, square picture frame. Students should come prepared to get plenty of hands-on practice with an assortment of hand tools. By the end of the class, students will have gained a deeper understanding of basic joinery techniques, anatomy and feel equipped to begin exploring their own joinery journey!
Additional Information:
- A material fee of $30 will be included in your total at check out.
- Enrollment is open to students ages 18 and up.
- Class will take a 1/2 hour lunch break around midday.
Jose Jimenez
Jose is a curious adventurer at heart, who loves to create, encourage and teach others. With two bachelor’s degrees under his belt; the first in Outdoor Education from Warren Wilson College in Asheville and the other in Carpentry from the American College of the Building Arts in Charleston, Jose brings a unique detailed oriented perspective to the built environment and an appreciation for the natural world that provides the resources and inspiration for the artistic expressions we create. Jose loves to explore the historical relationships humans have formed with the natural world in order to build functional yet beautiful pieces of furniture or architectural features, like doors or windows.
Jose currently works at Miracle Heights Adventures on the Crossnore campus as a high ropes course specialist, where he guides and facilitates people through an exhilarating outdoor adventure park, helping folks overcome fears, experience joys and a sense of mastery once completing the course.
