Artist Talk with Nicole Asselin
Event | Available
Join mixed-media artist and educator Nicole Asselin for an artist talk exploring her exhibition, Unseen Threads, on display in Sawtooth’s Redding Corridor Gallery February 15 through March 22.
Unseen Threads brings together a collection of handwoven textiles and naturally dyed tapestries by Asselin that are acts of building abstract landscapes, geologic formations, and pathways. Using a minimalist color palette and soft-edged geometric shapes, at their core, these works are about process—they are weavings about weaving and textiles about textiles. Inspired by the three Fates of Greek mythology, this series joins in conversation with the ancient story.
Free and open to all. Registration is requested.
Nicole Asselin
Nicole Asselin is a mixed-media artist and educator based in Winston–Salem, North Carolina. Asselin's work embraces textile and fiber practices, and her projects are textural, 3D and often narrative, telling the story of a material or process. She works in various media, but her focus is on natural materials that are locally sourced, grown, harvested, or foraged. Her work is concerned with environmental sustainability, and the artist's relationship to the materials they use. Asselin’s art is process-heavy, she asks the viewer to consider the art making process as a key element in the final creative expression.
Asselin holds a Master’s Degree in Art and Design from North Carolina State University, and a B.A. in Costume Design and Gender Studies from Bennington College. She offers classes and workshops nationally and internationally on textile design, weaving, natural dye practices, and leather working. She has taught Art and Design Fundamentals, and Sculpture and 3D design for various institutions including: the North Carolina School of the Arts, North Carolina State University, NCMA Winston Salem, Elsewhere Museum, Sawtooth School of Visual Art, The Textile Arts Center in New York, The Cordwainers Garden at the London College of Fashion, The Here Today Here Tomorrow Studio Collective in London, Etsy Labs in DUMBO, the Brooklyn Botanic Gardens, Brooklyn Grange Rooftop Gardens, The Queens County Farm Museum, and West Elm.
