Rarely are there opportunities to candidly photograph densely populated crowds in Winston Salem. Street photography is near and dear to C. Stephen Hurst, the director of Sawtooth's Photography department, with 20 plus years photographing the candid, the flamboyant, and the colorful moments of parades and festivals in New York City. In this 3-Class workshop learn the craft, practice, varied techniques, and ethics of street photography.

-Photograph street scenes of the Pride parade
-Learn the art and craft of Zone Focusing and the of anticipating a scene
-Gain a greater understanding of layering in composition
-Understand why certain types of lenses are preferred for street photography
-learn to identify street locations favorable to capturing candids


  • REQUIREMENTS: 

    A solid understanding of how to use your camera in aperture priority and manual mode. A comfortable pair of walking shoes.

    Ages 17 and up

    SCHEDULE


    1st class, JUNE 13th, day before the parade.  We meet at parade location to scout, practice, and prepare for the following day.

    2nd class, JUNE 14th, Parade Day,

    Class will occur just as the parade is ending. 1pm to 3:30pm. The focus is not on the floats but of the many energized pedestrians walk along the path. 

    3rd and Final class, June 20th. Takes place at Sawtooth School, a week after the 1st class. We will review and constructively critique the body of work we create.

    Important Health Requirement. Please note the first two classes will be entirely on your feet (1st class 90 min) (Parade Day 2.5 hrs) and the weather may be hot. This class is intended for those who can function comfortably and safely under these conditions.

C. Stephen Hurst

C. Stephen Hurst recently moved to Winston-Salem from New York City where he spent many years as a professional photographer and instructor at the International School of Photography. Hurst is a self-taught photographer who emphasizes connection, anticipation, and communication through his process; some of Hurst’s photography clients have included the Disney Family Foundation, Nike, and Columbia Business School. Hurst holds a B.F.A. in Cinema Studies from New York University Tisch School of the Arts. Learn more about his work at amancalledhurst.com.
