514. Lost Wax Casting
Class - Metals | Available
Discover the fascinating process of lost wax casting! Start by learning to carve hard waxes and model with soft waxes to create a wax model of a ring, pendant, or other jewelry-scale item. That model is invested in a flask which is burned out in a kiln. The resulting cavity in the investment is filled with molten metal using the vacuum casting process, and the cast jewelry piece emerges. The cast piece is then ready to finish by cutting off sprues, using files and polishing your piece. We cast with silver or bronze. Students may choose which to purchase for casting. Waxes, tools and other materials are discussed in class and many materials are provided. We limit casting to wax models created by the student. This class is open to age 16 to adult and repeat students are encouraged to attend and further skills.
