Sun Art: Mixed Media Cyanotypes | Ages 9-13

Class - Youth | Available

Plants, black-and-white images, text, objects, and drawings can all be used to create images with light-sensitive paper and cyanotype chemistry. There are many ways to go beyond the typical blue and white colors of "sun prints." We will explore masking techniques, bleaching, toning with tea and seed baths, controlling exposure times, as well as re-coating for additional colors. Additionally, we will incorporate collage elements of found paper or fabric, as well as paint accents to create unique art pieces and an art book.

  • CLASS INFORMATION: 

    What to Wear: Art gets messy, so wear clothing suitable for an artist! It sometimes gets chilly in the studios, so an extra layer is recommended.

    What to Bring: Sawtooth will provide all materials and supplies needed for class. Students are welcome to bring a water bottle to stay hydrated and a snack to be eaten during a break.


    While parents and guardians are more than welcome to stay in the building, we kindly ask that you don't stay with your children during the class. We've found that this can sometimes hinder the creative process. 


    Parking: Lastly, metered parking is available on Marshall and Spruce Street and is free on evenings and weekends.

    Communication: Please add youth@sawtooth.org to your contact list to ensure that emails do not go to junk mail. I will send an email one week before and the day before with all the necessary information.

Thea Clark

Thea Clark is recent transplant to Greensboro from New Jersey where she was a 2012 New Jersey State Council on the Arts fellow. Her artwork includes jewelry, sculpture, and installation. She has exhibited widely with solo shows at the New Jersey Center of Visual Arts, Velvet DaVinci (San Francisco), a two person show at The Houston Center of Contemporary Craft (Houston). National and international exhibitions including: The Museum of Art and Design (NYC), Museum of Modern Art (Arnhem, NL), University of Birmingham (Great Britain), Textile Museum (Washington D.C.), The Society of Arts and Crafts (Boston, MA), Newark Museum, State Museum (Trenton, NJ), Noyes Museum (Oceanville, NJ), Rochester Institute of Technology (NY), Jersey City and Kean Universities (NJ), among others. She has sold her work at American Craft Council, Sausalito Art Festival, and Smithsonian Craft shows. Publications include seven books in the US and Europe, and exhibition catalogues. She was a resident at the Vermont Studio Center (artist grant), visiting artist at Boise State University, and has given artist talks at Glassell School of Art (Houston), Rutgers University- Robeson Gallery (Newark, NJ). She has taught at Peters Valley School of Craft (Layton NJ), the Visual Arts Center of NJ, and the former Arts Workshop in Newark, NJ. She also enjoyed six summers teaching children metals and enameling at Frenchwoods Festival of the Arts (NY).
