Fall into Folding & Wicked Stitches

Workshop - Graphics | Available

In this workshop we'll explore a variety of paper folding and binding methods as well as ways to combine and expand on each technique. Students will focus on basics, create a variety of models to inspire future bookbinding endeavors, and work towards a completed project.

Day one is all about paper folding and manipulation including accordion folds and a modified Zhen Xian Bao, the Chinese Thread Book structure. On day two we'll focus on stitches and binding methods such as pamphlet stitches, stab binding, and link stitch. We'll also begin to formalize our final book forms. On our final day we'll delight in combining our folded paper and binding techniques into finished books.

This workshop is suitable for beginners as well as those wishing to refresh their skills or expand on the techniques.

  • This workshop is part of Sawtooth Luminaries, a long weekend of immersive and intensive workshops that will take place from October 11-13, 2024, in Winston-Salem, NC. This exciting new event welcomes nationally acclaimed artists to provide learning experiences for creative students of all skill levels. It expands Sawtooth's depth and scope as a community art school and aligns with our vision to be a creative hub for Winston-Salem and the entire region.

The weekend's programming will balance structured studio time in Sawtooth's landmark downtown facilities with communal lunch offerings and evening events that explore Winston's reputation as the City of Arts and Innovation.

Tuition includes three days of instruction and dedicated studio time, catered lunches, opportunities to socialize with other artists in attendance, and exclusive access to some of the city’s most beloved art institutions. Special rates at The Historic Brookstown Inn, Sawtooth’s preferred lodging partner, are available for enrolled students and guests. (Discount code is provided after registration.)

For the past 20+ years, I’ve worked as a project manager and graphic designer in the non profit, marketing and event planning arenas. My clients are diverse and range from healthcare, small business, education and medical research, to retail and weddings.

Being both a designer and maker I often employ my hand skills to my branding and corporate work and my design aesthetic to my bookbinding projects. I enjoy collaborating with my clients to bring new ideas to life on the web and in print.

My work has been featured in magazines such as UppercaseWhere Women CreateGraphic Design USA and in the Graphis Poster Annual 2015. Additionally, my work is held in private collections and in the Atkins Library North Carolina Artist Collection at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte.
