2301. Raku Kiln Building & Raku Firing Workshop

Workshop - Ceramics | Registration closed 8/30/2024

Learn how to build an efficient Raku kiln with ceramic wools and metal wire casing. Students will also learn to properly layout a movable brick foundation for Raku firing. History of Raku and Raku glaze theory will be presented through an one-hour visual presentation. 

Upon the completion of Raku kiln building, students will Raku on the 2nd day of the workshop at SECCA and learn various post-reduction methods. Ages: 16 - Adult

A $30 material fee for 25 ibs of stoneware clay, Raku glazes, and raku firing will be added at time of checkout. 

The Raku kiln building portion of the workshop is held in our new studio located at the Generation Center / 114 W. 30th St, W-S, NC 27105.

The Raku firing is held in Sawtooth Wood Fired Kiln Pavilion located at SECCA / 750 Marguerite Dr, W-S, NC 27106

Friday and Saturday classes will both be held from 10am - 3pm.


Liu, Po Wen
Po Wen Liu

Po Wen is the Director of Ceramics at Sawtooth. He studied ceramic engineering in Taiwan and received his BFA degree in ceramics and ceramics sculpture from the Rochester Institute of Technology, and MFA degree in ceramics from Northern Illinois University.

Po Wen is the manuscript consultant for 2002 Newbery Medal awarded book, A Single Shard, by Linda Sue Park, regarding making celadon. A Place of Reflection, by Dr. Elizabeth Perril, an article about Po Wen and his works was featured in Ceramics Monthly.

Po Wen served as the director of The Pottery Workshop Jingdezhen, and executive director of Jingdezhen International Studio from 2015 to 2018 where he oversaw international residency program and facilitated international ceramics events, serving the international ceramics community in China and abroad.

Po Wen has also taught ceramic courses and workshops nationally and internationally including University of North Carolina at Greensboro, Sawtooth School for the Visual Art, Leksands folkhögskola, Leksand, Sweden and the School of Design and Arts, Beijing Institute of Technology, Beijing, China.
