Who doesn't like a little bling? Luster adds a little extra sparkle and bling to any ceramic piece. Join us for a one day workshop learning how to apply gold, white gold, and mother of pearl luster. Students will learn how to prepare their work, apply luster, clean up methods, and safety protocols. This class will introduce your current body of work with new surface decoration possibilities. Ages 18 +

  • We will schedule a luster firing directly after the workshop and participants will be notified when luster work is unloaded from the kiln. Monthly luster firings will be scheduled for students who are interested in continuing to fire luster ware. 

  • Each student will need to purchase their own Duncan branded luster. Students may choose to purchase just one luster or can purchase gold, white gold, and mother of pearl lusters to experiment with all three. Participants will need to bring 1-3 pieces of work that have already been glaze fired as well as 3 watercolor brushes ranging small to medium in size. When considering glazed work to bring, remember that the luster will take on the finish of whatever glaze it is over. Meaning, if a glaze is glossy the luster will be glossy, but if the glaze is matte then the luster will also be matte.

Marisa Mahathey is a small batch ceramic artist and illustrator, born and raised in the Piedmont of North Carolina. She holds a BFA from UNC Asheville and has been a long-term artist in residence at MudFire Studio & Gallery and Sawtooth School for Visual Art.
