Make your own traditional Gratsäge (Graht-Zay-Geh) also known as the sliding dovetail saw. This handy cabinetmaker's tool is used to cut the edges of the track that the sliding dovetail fits into. The sliding dovetail saw played a pivotal role in the early days of local Moravian furniture making but also has it's place on the modern woodworker's bench. Learn the basics of sawmaking from cutting, shaping, and sharpening the teeth, to fitting and shaping the elegant handle. This simple but effective saw makes an excellent introduction to sawmaking, with a unique tool that you won't find in stores.

Additional Information:
  • A $50 materials fee is due at registration.
  • Registration will close one week prior to the start of class to allow adequate time for material sourcing
  • This class is open to students ages 16 and up.

  • Curious about what role a sliding dovetail joint might play in your furniture? Take a look at the sliding dovetail battens on this Moravian dining chair made by instructor Chris Wilson. The batten is what joins the seat to the legs, but it does so with no glue, which will allow the chair to expand and contract with seasonal wood movement without cracking or warping.
