Painting watercolor outside can help relieve stress and allow the artist to observe, enjoy and create in a natural setting. The course explores the tools and techniques associated with plein-air (outdoor) watercolor painting as a means to personal expression and relaxation. Emphasis will be placed on using watercolor washes, layers, brushwork technique and color mixing as students observe light, atmosphere, and color in the natural setting. Ages: 13 - Adult

  • This is an outdoor class, so bring sun protection and water.
    • a set of basic watercolors and palette - if they do not have something I recommend the Winsor & Newton Cotman Watercolors Palette Set - available at Michaels (or something similar) https://www.michaels.com/winsor-and-newton-cotman-water-colours-palette-set/D240153S.html
    • A #6 or #8 round watercolor brush (again Michaels is a good place for this) - if you have other brushes you would like to use as well that is fine
    • A medium size jar or plastic container to hold water
    • A blanket or camp chair to sit on the ground
    • Sunscreen or hat if desired
Coyne, John

John Coyne is a scenic designer, architect and professor at UNCSA where he has taught Plein-Air Watercolor for the past 5 years. John enjoys looking for the story told within a seen and trying to capture that within his work, sometimes in a realistic way, sometime more abstractly.
