Students will learn how to coil build on the wheel, this will include joining and paddling techniques. Students will also learn how to source, create, apply, and burnish terra sigillata using local wild clay. Lastly, students will learn techniques for building their own pit kiln out of cinder blocks and will learn how to successfully fire their work.

  • Workshop Schedule:
  • Saturday, 2/26 | 1:00 PM - 6:00 PM | Coil building on the wheel
  • Saturday, 3/5 | 1:00 PM - 4:00 PM | Sourcing wild clay. Making and applying terra sigillata
  • Saturday, 3/12 | 1:00 PM - 4:00 PM | Build and fire pit kiln (off campus)
  • .
  • This will be a hands on workshop with participants learning to create their own pit kilns. Students should be comfortable with some physical labor as we prepare our firing .
  • Building and firing the pit kiln well be held off-site. Students should have reliable transportation to drive about twenty minutes from Sawtooth. Address to the firing location will be shared with registered students.
  • Clay for workshop will be available for purchase during the workshop. Amount of clay needed will be determined by each student according to their ability level.
Clark, Rachel

Originally from Pennsylvania, Rachel earned her bachelor’s of fine arts from Tennessee Technological University and her master’s of fine arts from East Carolina University. A teacher for more than 10 years (five at the college level), Rachel invented a technique called Oxide Fusion Printing, and she specializes in digital technological application onto traditional craft material and locally sourced "wild" clay and glaze. She has also worked in blacksmithing, fiber arts, glass blowing, fine metals, and woodworking.
